Join NCFA and the adoption community on Thursday, June 25th as we go to Capitol Hill for Advocacy Day! This is a great opportunity to engage with members of Congress to share your adoption experiences and ask for their support on adoption related legislation. Your voice can help shape the future of adoption for children and families across the U.S. and around the world!
Advocacy Day is for everyone! This event is not limited to Conference attendees – it’s open to everyone – birth parents, adoptees, adoptive families, child welfare and social work professionals, and resource organizations who serve the adoption community.
Leave the logistics to us! NCFA is doing the legwork of scheduling visits and transportation so you can focus on preparing for your visit, connecting with your Congressional members and advocates.
First time to do an advocacy visit? No problem! Expertise and experience is not required. In 2018, we took over 100 advocates to Capitol Hill and many in the group had never done a Hill visit before, and we had a very successful day. NCFA will equip you with guidance and training to make sure you are prepared, and you will have a partner and/or group to do your visits with.
A breakout session teaching best practices in advocacy. The conclusion of this session will provide time for groups to gather, coordinate schedules, plan for their visits, etc.
Advocacy Day Only Participants:
NCFA will offer a training webinar in advance of the Conference and provide you with Advocacy Day materials by email as well as a hard copy on Advocacy Day. You will be contacted by your group leader during the Conference to coordinate schedule details.
Advocacy Day Only participants have two options on Advocacy Day. You can arrive early at the Hotel at UMD to receive advocacy day materials and connect with your group, and then ride in with us on the charter buses. Or, you can meet us in D.C. near Capitol Hill. Exact time and location TBD.
Congress can be unpredictable! Therefore, it is important that you attend the training webinar or come to the training session in order to understand the legislation that will be discussed on advocacy day and learn about talking to Congress. For reference, here is an overview of NCFA's adoption-related legislation and NCFA's policy priorities. Want to get a head start on your training? Check out our Adoption Advocacy Toolkit.
As the day draws nearer, we’ll have more details for you, but here’s what you can expect in general:
Light breakfast at Hotel UMD
Depart hotel by charter buses
Arrive in DC near Capitol Hill, location TBD
Advocacy Day meetings begin at approximately 9am
While we cannot guarantee that you will meet with all of your Congressional members, it is our goal to schedule meetings with Senators and Representatives from your state, and typically you will go with other advocates from your state. Sometimes the member is available to meet personally with advocates, but many times it is a staff person who handles adoption related issues that you will be meeting with. This is a great opportunity for face to face interaction that can be the start or continuation of an ongoing relationship with your elected representatives who make critical decisions on adoption related legislation.
